When should the TMJ be evaluated and treated if nothing hurts? This is very important if cosmetic dentistry is going to be done. Often when a patient changes their smile, the bite may function differently. If the normal jaw movements interfere with the proposed treatment, the cosmetic dentistry will fail or worse, the underlying tooth will fail. There are some very simple tests to see if the joint is stable. Evaluation of the condition of the teeth is also part of the diagnosis. A dental blueprint of the proposed treatment is invaluable prior to the final treatment. The teeth, TMJ and muscles all have to work in harmony. If there is an imbalance, the muscles will win every time and take out anything in the way.
